Should you assign house chores to your neurodiverse child?

The answer to this question is “yes.” You should give them simple tasks to help them learn about responsibility as they grow up.

Some kids, even those without Autism Spectrum Disorder, find it difficult to do chores. They see it as more of a burden than a responsibility. But how will they learn if they keep on being uncooperative?

The goal is to make the tasks fun for them. You can incorporate Play Therapy so they can enjoy their activities. Below are some examples:

  • Boost motor skills using basketball as an instrument.
Teach them to shoot their used clothes in a basketball ring with a laundry basket underneath. Do the same with small toys.
  • Improve their memory with organizing and familiarization techniques.
Train them to set the table, stack lightweight toy boxes, and put shoes on the rack.
  • Develop problem-solving and numeracy skills with sorting.
Ask your child to collect items based on size and color. Tell them to count their toys while keeping them to ensure they are complete.

These activities are simple life skills they need for independence and physical and mental development.
